FODMAP Foods

Navigating the FODMAP Map: A Guide to Quieting Your Gut

If you live with IBS, you’ve likely heard the term FODMAP. But what does it actually mean? During IBS Awareness Month 2026, we want to demystify this dietary approach and show how it can help you "manage the invisible" triggers in your daily life.

What are FODMAPs?
FODMAPs are a group of sugars (carbohydrates) that are not absorbed well by the small intestine. Because they aren't fully digested, they sit in the gut, pull in water, and are fermented by bacteria, leading to the bloating, gas, and pain many patients experience. The acronym stands for:
Fermentable
Oligosaccharides (e.g., wheat, onions, garlic, beans)
Disaccharides (e.g., lactose in milk and yogurt)
Monosaccharides (e.g., fructose in honey and certain fruits)
And
Polyols (e.g., sorbitol and mannitol found in some fruits and sugar-free sweeteners)

High vs. Low: Making Smarter Swaps
You don't have to stop eating—you just have to start swapping! Here are some common examples to help you navigate your plate:
Instead of (High FODMAP)Try This (Low FODMAP)
1. Onions & Garlic - the green tops of spring onions
2. Apples & Pears - Strawberries, Blueberries, or Oranges
3. Wheat Bread/Pasta - Gluten-free options or Sourdough (traditional)
4. Milk & Soft Cheese - Lactose-free milk, Hard cheeses (like Cheddar)
5. Honey - Maple syrup or Stevia

3 Steps to Success
1. Start a Food Diary: Track your meals and your symptoms for two weeks. This is the best way to see if high-FODMAP foods are truly your "hidden" triggers.

2. The Three-Phase Approach: The Low-FODMAP diet is not meant to be forever. It involves a short Elimination phase, followed by a careful Reintroduction phase to see which specific sugars you can tolerate, and finally, a Personalization phase.

3. Don’t Go It Alone: Restrictive diets can be stressful. Work with a registered dietitian to ensure you’re getting the nutrition you need while calming your gut.

A Note from Your Gastroenterologist:
Every gut is a unique roadmap. What works for one person may not work for you. Let's work together to find your balance.
